Blankets for the Homeless

A friend of mine coordinates a project to provide blankets to the homeless or those staying in shelters. She recently put out a plea to get more squares knitted or crocheted, these could be in any yarn and just needed to be 6 x 6 inches in size. I was happy to oblige and raided my cupboard for all left overs that I had and began to crochet. I still have not mastered the art of being able to do a decent granny square so stuck to a simple double crochet stitch.  It was satisfying and quite quick to produce a handful for her although I was struggling to get them to be exactly 6 inches. hopefully she will have other odd sizes she can use up at some point.

This has been a great in car project when I am waiting around for the school pick up, much better than my usual routine of endless checking of e-mails and social networks!

Thought this year I would also keep track of how much I do as a bit of internal competition, I am counting at the point at which I pass things to Mrs BFTH. so will keep a tally at the end of this page.
My crochet techniques has improved quite a bit since I started doing this, the squares are so small that you can finish one and then try a new technique out on the next. I have just started to crochet in my starting ends as I go which saves on having to stitch them in later.

Here is hopefully a link to the Facebook page and the website that is in the process of being built:

January 2016

I have completed 22 squares and edged 4 blankets

February

2nd February - just handed over my another edged blanket, that takes it to 5 but have had to take a break until I get a few jobs at home finished.

22nd February - managed to get 6 squares handed over - that's now a total of 28.  I do have a few more ready but I tend to wait until I finish a particular colour scheme so they can be put together if wanted.

25th February - a further 18 handed over - these were a selection made from wools that had been donated,....running total...46 squares....nearly back on track for one a day :)

26th February - another 6 squares done and handed over - 52 in total
March

April

24th April - things have been slipping but I have just handed back a whole blanket that I stitched together and edged, also been working on squares at home but only counting them on here when I hand them over. Just worked out that I have only done half the amount I should have done by now...this is not good will have to crochet at double speed.

July

10th July  - another blanket handed over that I have stitched and edged, also along with it 22 squares, taking my square total to 64. I am seriously behind on my square count, I have to do 302 more by the end of the year if I was to follow the lead set by another square contributor.

15th July - handed over 14 squares today, total square count 78.....

10th September - handed over 71 squares, total count 149, I am now far behind my total of 1 square a day. I also handed back a blanket, stitched and edged.
Enjoy 😀
